The 2001 Arnold G. Wedum Distinguished Achievement Award is given to an individual for outstanding contributions to biological safety accomplished through teaching, research, service, or leadership.

Diane Fleming

The American Biological Safety Association was pleased to present the 2001 Arnold G. Wedum Distinguished Achievement Award to Diane Fleming for twenty years of teaching, service and leadership to the American Biological Safety Association and to the field of biosafety.

Diane Fleming has made many contributions to ABSA by serving on the ABSA Council for 6 years, a councilor for 3 years and President-elect, President, Past-President (1988-1991). She also served on the Certification Committee (1991), Certification Development committee (1995-2001), Evaluation Board (1993), Technical Review Committee (1993-2001), Committee on Accreditation of BSC Certifiers Registration Program for Biosafety Professionals, Long Range Planning Committee (1991, 1997), Ethics Committee (Chaired 1998), Nominating Committee (2001). She has served as President of MABSA & CHABSA. In addition, she has been very active promoting biosafety outside of ABSA. Contributions include commenting or giving testimony on the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard and DOT & CDC infectious material transport issues; serving on and chairing the ASM Laboratory Biosafety Committee; working on NCCLS Guidelines on Biosafety in Clinical Laboratories; serving on the ASTM Standard for Sharps Containers; educating several hundred students at the Johns Hopkins Biosafety Course during the 1980's, served as editor of the the ASM book "Biological Safety: Principles and Practices" in 1995 and 2000, championing the concept of Risk Groups and Risk Assessment in the United States in the mid-90s by lecturing widely on the subject. She ultimately compiled the Risk Group Classification for Infectious Agents and made it available to all by placing it on the ABSA website.
